Surviving the board examination

THE EXAM

  • Absolutes such as always, never, and only are usually wrong.

  • Read the stem (the information in the actual question) to figure out the answer.  It is usually the last sentence that is the actual question.  Often, the bulk of the information is superfluous.

  • Look for clues in the case history.

  • Limit yourself to only 1 - 2 minutes per question.  (The board allows 2 minutes per question).

  • Take the best educated guess if you do not know for sure; your first answer is your best.

  • Pace yourself--look at how many questions in a particular session and determine at what time you should have half of the test completed.
