(KNOW THIS) Risk factors for cardiovascular events include:
  1. 1.Hypertension
  2. 2.Smoking
  3. 3.Family history of cardiovascular disease in men <55 years or women <65 years
  4. 4.Age over 65 for females and 55 for males
  5. 5.Family History of premature cardiovascular disease in females under 65 and males under 55
  6. 6.Hyperlipidemia
  7. 7.Microalbuminuria and/or estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) less than 60 ml/min
  8. 8.Physical inactivity
  9. 9.Obesity with a body mass index of equal to or greater than 30 kg/m2   
  10. 10.Diabetes mellitus. 
 

A diagnosis of metabolic syndrome is made when there is 3 or more of the following: 1.  waist circumference in men >102 cm (>40 in) or in women >88 cm (>35 in) 2.  HDL < 40 mg/dl  for men and <50 mg/dl for women 3.  triglycerides >=150 mg/dl 4.   BP>=130/85 5.   fasting glucose of >= 110 mg/dl.

Areas of target organ damage secondary to hypertension include:

 

-Stroke or transient ischemic attack
-Left ventricular hypertrophy
-Nephropathy
-Peripheral arterial disease
-Retinopathy
-Prior coronary revascularization
-Heart failure
-Angina or prior myocardial infarction
-Chronic kidney disease
