Laboratory tests: baseline lab tests that should be considered in hypertensive patients prior to starting treatment include the following:  CBC, ekg, sodium, potassium, fasting blood glucose, bun, creatinine, HDL and total cholesterol, and urinalysis.  Other tests that can be considered if clinically indicated include  echocardiogram to evaluate for LVH, fasting lipid panel, TSH, 24-hour creatinine clearance, 24-hour urinary protein, 24-hour urine metanephrine, microalbuminuria, cortisol level, and renal and/or arterial ultrasound.
