Introduction -classification
of diabetes has changed recently. No
longer is insulin dependent/insulin independent used, rather Diabetes type 1 and
Diabetes type 2. -most people
with type 1 have autoimmune disease with autoantibodies against the pancreatic
islet cells leading to a lack of insulin and a propensity for diabetic
ketoacidosis(dka). These patients
usually present at a young age, but 25% present after there 20’s.
Type 2 usually presents later in life and is secondary to insulin
resistance with relative insulin deficiency for the amount of resistance.
Although type 2 diabetics are less prone to dka, it can still occur. -In the US,
Canada and Europe 80 percent of diabetics are type 2 |
