Introduction

-classification of diabetes has changed recently.  No longer is insulin dependent/insulin independent used, rather Diabetes type 1 and Diabetes type 2.

-most people with type 1 have autoimmune disease with autoantibodies against the pancreatic islet cells leading to a lack of insulin and a propensity for diabetic ketoacidosis(dka).  These patients usually present at a young age, but 25% present after there 20’s.  Type 2 usually presents later in life and is secondary to insulin resistance with relative insulin deficiency for the amount of resistance.  Although type 2 diabetics are less prone to dka, it can still occur.

-In the US, Canada and Europe 80 percent of diabetics are type 2

-Other causes of hyperglycemia/diabetes include:  diseases of the exocrine pancreas dysfunction such as cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis (bronze diabetes), chronic pancreatitis, endocrinopathies (Cushing’s Disease, acromegaly, glucagonomas…) medications (e.g. steroids), gestational diabetes.
